Mermaids, a transgender support agency in the UK, has been exposed for providing children with potentially harmful products and medical advice. Representatives from the organisations recently claimed in court that they do not provide a medical service, they simply refer young people to gender clinics and specialists. The Telegraph has uncovered evidence of the Mermaids online help centre offering advice to users who present themselves as young as 13 that controversial hormone-blocking drugs are safe and “totally reversible”. In the last month alone, this newspaper has seen discussions in the charity’s moderated forum for 12 to 15-year-olds on how to raise money to start taking drugs and the best way to take testosterone. A moderator also publicly congratulated a teenage user for deciding that they were transgender by the age of 13 and deciding that they wanted drugs and “all the surgeries”. There is also evidence that Mermaids encourage children to act without parental knowledge or consent. In an email exchange with an adult posing as a 14-year-old girl wanting to transition to a boy, Mermaids staff agreed to send out a breast binder despite being repeatedly told that the child’s mother would “not allow” it. They asked for the name and address the user wanted the package sent to, which would allow them to receive it without their parents’ knowledge. The Telegraph has seen evidence that Mermaids has been running a free “binder scheme” since at least 2019 and has offered it to users who say that they are 13 and their parents will not buy them one. Chest binders restrict breathing and can cause back pain, chest pain, skin issues, bad posture and in some cases broken bones and development issues. Mermaids are also telling vulnerable children that puberty blockers “simply suppress the onset of puberty until you are ready to make a decision on how to go forward. They are totally reversible”. This claim has been challenged by medical experts in many countries as long-term studies simply do not support the assertion. Evidence suggests long term use results in zero sexual function as adults, sterility, and both bone density and brain development issues. Miriam Cates, Tory MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, said that the charity “is stating an extreme position on gender ideology and it is going behind parents’ backs to speak to children”. “This raises huge safeguarding red flags,” she said. Binary spokeswoman Kirralie Smith said all gender clinics and referral services must be thoroughly investigated. “Evidence is mounting that gender clinics and services are doing irreversible harm to young people,” she said. “Often this happens without parental knowledge or consent. “This must stop now before more harm is done. “Rigorous and impartial studies must be conducted and children protected from political activists pushing their agenda.”
Kevin Lister, a Swindon maths teacher, is claiming unfair dismissal after being fired for “mis-gendering” a student. He has labelled it a “witch-hunt” for calling out “dangerous transgender ideology”.The teacher’s 18-year career was unblemished until being sacked for alleged “gross misconduct”. In truth, he refused to refer to a female student as ‘he’ or by a boy’s name until he could confirm the child was transitioning with parental knowledge and consent. The 59-year-old teacher told The Mail on Sunday he was concerned that the ‘out-of-the-blue’ request amounted to social transition, which could put the teen on a pathway to irreversible medical treatments. ‘I wanted at least to make sure that my student had parental support and was making an informed decision,’ he said. ‘As a parent myself, I would have been furious if my child had taken this step and I hadn’t been told anything.’ Mr Lister said he was ‘gobsmacked’ when he approached the safeguarding officers and was told the parents would not be informed about the student’s wish to identify as male in the classroom. The school’s guide to supporting transitioning students states that staff should ‘maintain confidentiality and only tell others about the person’s trans status with their permission’. Mr Lister said he then found himself in an ‘impossible position’: ‘I ended up pointing to her as politely as I could to avoid either dead-naming her or supporting transition without parental consent.’ A few weeks later the student wanted to enter a female maths Olympiad. Mr Lister said: ‘I put the names of the students on the board who wanted to take part and I put her name up on the board as being a female’s name to enter a female maths competition.’ Some students reportedly took offence and reported the teacher for transphobia. Three complaints were upheld against him for “transphobic discrimination” and harassment and because he “refused to use” students’ preferred name and he/him pronouns. The letter informing him of his sacking stated he had “degraded” the student and “violated” her dignity. Last month the then Attorney General, Suella Braverman, said the law was clear that under-18s could not legally change their gender, meaning schools were under no legal obligation to address children by a new pronoun. Mr Kruger, MP for Devizes, Wiltshire, said: ‘I am very concerned that a school agreed to affirm a child’s transgender identity without parental consent.’ Binary spokeswoman Kirralie Smith said the school was way out of line. “School staff are not trained medical experts and they do not replace the sacred and primary role of a parent,” she said. “They are there to educate, not indoctrinate, children. The usurping of parental rights must stop for the sake of child protection. “Activists in schools are aggressively promoting this political agenda to the detriment of families.”
A gender studies student from the University of Melbourne has chosen to conduct some research of Binary Facebook followers. The School of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts student Jo Church has been privately messaging our followers and supporters asking them to be interviewed for her study. The project is called, ‘Exploring the gender debate in Australia: An analysis of image and text’. Dr Kalissa Alexeyeff is listed as the “Responsible Researcher”. Church has been privately messaging supporters on Facebook and asking them to be interviewed via Zoom for one hour for her project. The description of the research is: Discussions over transgender rights, women sex-based rights and sex/gender education have erupted on social media in recent years. This research seeks to understand opinions on these views in the context of Australia. Using the Facebook page Binary Australia as a case study, this research seeks to understand what encourages users to respond to images and texts which discuss issues of sex, gender and sexuality. This research additionally aims to understand the emotions individuals experience when reacting to this content and/or participating in these debates. Church claims the questions will be “open-ended” regarding Binary posts and discussions. The aim is “to explore your opinions on these matters and explore the range of feelings provoked in these debates.” Church promises anonymity, privacy and confidentiality. The videos will not be shared and Church will interpret the data according to her views. She claims the benefits will be in “understanding a diversity of opinions relating to gender which are discussed on social media. Understanding these views hopes to reveal underlying individual concerns on the matter and ultimately lead to a more holistic and productive debate.” Participants can request copies of any journal articles subsequently published. Binary spokeswoman Kirralie Smith advised participants to beware. “The very existence of a course called ‘gender studies’ validates the political ideology that denies the primacy of biological reality,” she said. “Gender is just a personality expression, it is not measurable, consistent or reliable. “Gender studies promotes appropriating stereotypes. On the surface they claim gendered stereotypes are the problem and must be analysed and deconstructed, while at the same time advocating for males who appropriate female stereotypes and females who appropriate male stereotypes. “Binary looks forward to seeing the results of this research.”
