UK male doctor registered as female in Australia
A male doctor from the UK has moved to Australia. He has registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a female.
He is the same male who was embroiled in the Sandie Peggie case after the female nurse complained about him in the women’s changeroom.
Records from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) confirm Upton is now working as a trainee in emergency medicine.
Documents reveal the medic, who was born male but now identifies as a woman, is currently based at Port Macquarie Base Hospital and Kempsey District Hospital in the south eastern state.
AHPRA protocols define ‘female’ as any individual “whose biological sex is that of a female” and anyone whose “gender identity or gender expression is that of a female.”
Mary Howden, director at campaign group, Women’s Rights Network, said: “It’s shocking that Upton has now been allowed to register as a female doctor in Australia when he is, in fact, male.
“It may well be legal there but it airbrushes any inconvenient past from public view.
“If a female patient asks specifically for a female doctor, it is usually for a good reason – either she is a victim of sexual assault or domestic violence. Or maybe she simply feels more comfortable being examined by a female.
“Either way, it is not compassionate medicine to send in a male doctor who is living as a female.”
Female patients and staff have no legal ability to object to the male bodied doctor claiming to be a woman.
Australian law provides protection for males identifying as women.
