The ABC rejects opinion piece by Sall Grover
Sall Grover exchanged 37 emails over three weeks with ABC editorial staff only to have her reasonable and factual opinion piece rejected by the tax-payer funded media organisation that claims to be balanced and unbiased.
ABC Religion & Ethics Editor Scott Stephens engaged mostly with Sall, extensively redrafting the article twice in an attempt to meet the ABC’s requirements for publication.
In rejecting the opinion piece, Stephens cited “pervasive inaccuracies” in Grover’s presentation of the Sex Discrimination Act and Giggle v Tickle, and “overstatement” about the extent to which changes to the Act present a threat or danger to women and single-sex spaces.
However, Stephens did not explain what these inaccuracies were, and Grover was never shown the “significant rewrite” Stephens claimed he had done to address them.
Stephens had earlier stated that Grover’s use of language such as “biological fact”, “truth” and “material reality” was a “problem” because of the “high likelihood of alienating and offending the very people I would imagine you are hoping to convince”.
Read that again.
The words “biological fact”, “truth” and “material reality” are a problem for the ABC.
The editors didn’t want to publish an opinion piece that relied heavily on these terms that are heavily supported by unarguable facts.
Grover initially contacted ABC Editorial Director Gavin Fang on May 28 to pitch the article, noting his recent comments at a Senate Estimates hearing “emphasising (the) ABC’s impartiality and the importance of presenting different perspectives on contentious issues.”
“An op-ed from my viewpoint would contribute meaningfully to that diversity, offering balance on a case of significant public interest,” she wrote.
Fang replied the following day to say he had passed her email on to “the appropriate editorial team”.
“They make commissioning decisions independent of my role and I can’t guarantee they’ll take you up on the offer. However, please feel free to stay in touch with me ... I’m always happy to take on board suggestions or feedback about our work,” he wrote.
The ABC constantly publishes emotive and inaccurate articles in favour of transgender ideology. The whole premise of transgender ideology is based on the lie that humans can change sex and the deception that taking drugs or undergoing surgery will enable a person to “transition.”
The article was framed as a response to a controversial article published on the ABC’s Religion & Ethics website on May 18, by human rights law professor Paula Gerber, in which Gerber argued Grover’s defeat in Tickle v Giggle “puts an end to any debate about who is a woman” and hailed it as a “victory for women’s rights”.
It also sought to address a June 5 ABC News article which quoted Sex Discrimination Commissioner Anna Cody condemning as “a retrograde step” Nationals MP Alison Penfold’s private members’ bill, which attempted to reintroduce biological definitions of “man” and “woman” to the Sex Discrimination Act.
Australia’s Sex Discrimination Act 1984 defined a “woman” as “a member of the female sex irrespective of age”.
In 2013, the Gillard government removed that definition, adding a clause to prohibit discrimination “on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status”.
Grover’s first draft opened stating: “Some readers will find this uncomfortable. Others will dismiss it as unkind. But here is the undeniable biological fact that underpins this entire debate: the only prerequisite to being a ‘trans woman’ is to be male. I cannot be a trans woman, no matter how I feel, because I am female. This is not hatred; it is grammar, biology, and reality meeting in plain English. Paula Gerber and Anna Cody, in their recent contributions to the ABC, insist otherwise. They are wrong, and understanding precisely why matters more than ever.”
The exchange between Sall and the editors was extremely polite. Honestly, Sall has the patience of a saint. It was almost comical to read the exchange, and the mental gymnastics performed by the ABC would surely qualify for the Olympics.
