A radical view of surrogacy and family

Nothing is off-limits when it comes to de-gendering society; all gender norms must be broken down.

That’s why ideas being championed by radical activists totally disregard the value of womanhood – even their most incredibly precious, superhuman power: reproduction.

BioEdge has summarised norm-breaking ideas put forward by feminist Sophie Lewis in her book, Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family.

"If more children are born to surrogates, the capitalist notion that children ‘belong’ to those whose genetics they share will break down,” Lewis writes enthusiastically.

She looks forward to the dissolution of the mother-child bond, embracing “polyparental abundance”, and avoids using the terms “women” and “female” as she believes “there’s no call for them”.

“There can be no utopian thought on reproduction that does not involve uncoupling gestation from the gender binary,” Lewis states.

Kirralie Smith, Binary spokeswoman, was horrified by this view.

“This goes beyond breaking down gender norms.  Children shouldn’t belong to their parents?  Try telling that to any parent!  Since when isn’t genetics a very real bond?  And whoever heard of ‘polyparental’?”

“De-gendering motherhood is ridiculous. Only women can fall pregnant and have babies. Mothers play a very unique and essential role in bringing a child into the world, nurturing and raising babies. Robbing children of a mother is detrimental to the child and society at large.”
