The Morrison government has stuck with common sense to ensure identity documents record a person’s sex.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that, “A person’s gender will remain on birth certificates as the federal government pledges to override state laws and block “reckless” moves to strip the document of male and female status.

Sex and gender are important and necessary for planning by government agencies. The Australian Bureau of Statistics relies on such data.

Kirralie Smith, Binary spokeswoman, is pleased to hear the government will protect important aspects of our identity. “Official documents must preserve the true biological identity of people for security, health and legal identification purposes.” In addition Smith said, “There are many consequences of removing sex and gender from such documents.Biological sex is critical for matters of women’s shelters, sport, prisons, school bathrooms, dormitories and so much more.”
