Biological Sex at Birth No Longer Counts in New York
The Guardian has reported, “M, F – or X? New Yorkers are to be given the option of choosing a third gender on their birth certificates, under legislation that passed in the city on Wednesday.”
This means a person can identify as male, female or non-binary and have it recorded on their birth certificate. Birth certificates have traditionally recorded the sex of the person at birth. Now this has been changed to reflect how a person feels regarding their gender.
“Replacing biological facts with preferred feelings poses some interesting scenarios,” said Binary spokeswoman Kirralie Smith. ”Birth certificates should be a statement of truth, not feelings.”
The news report says, “The legislation will also let transgender New Yorkers change the gender on their birth certificate from male to female or vice versa without getting a doctor’s sign-off, via an affidavit.”
“This will have very serious consequences when it comes to women’s refuges, sports, prisons, health care and a whole range of services specifically targeted to either men or women. Biological sex does matter and needs to be on the public record,” Mrs Smith said.
